배가 고프지 않아도 운다. 신생아의 울음은 신생아의 언어이다. 울음 속에 음색이 있다. 여러 종류의 음색과 음량으로, 신체 언어로 그들 자신들의 필요한 것을 부모들에게 알려준다.
